11:27 am - Happy Fourth of July...
|
For those of us in America, it's a day of fireworks, grilling, and socialization.
[Random tangent: I went and bled for other people today, and don't feel all that bad. Yay.]
In the proper spirit of this country, I leave you to your revels with only this quote: "Happy 'Fuck High Taxes and Domineering Government' Day!"
And I know I can do this only because my friends list is so tiny.

Guess who's back? Back again.
The cardinal. I called him James, just so I could shorten it to Jim. Pretty much because Jim is an awesome name for a cardinal, y/y? Anyway, Jim's an idiot. We have a big window that looks into our kitchen, and Jim has decided that there's a cardinal who keeps attacking him through that window. ... Jim is that cardinal. *sigh* And I thought I'd gotten rid of him.
Stupid bird. It's a window. And that mirror on the side of the car? A mirror. Which is why the bird disappears when you fly around it.

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well let's see. I stole this one from <lj user="dameruth">.
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. 4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

2:23 pm - Oh. Yes. I do indeed have a life in there somewhere.
|
Okay, so it occurs to me that I have never actually finished The Time Traveler's Wife before. This occurs to me when thing stop looking so familiar, and then WOW, I'm suddenly crying about it. It's a book. This shouldn't be an issue. But it apparently is. Toulouse helped me out by sitting with me and purring, and I don't think she noticed that she was being a tissue of sorts. I certainly did when she ended up being damp. Oops. If you haven't read this book, go find a copy. It's pretty. Amazingly so. Because I just don't randomly cry like that. Or I don't think I do. I feel better now.
I'm nervous; I've downloaded the new Firefox, but I haven't installed it yet because I don't know whether it'll keep my applications from v2. Unfortunately, I still don't know. Am considering just installing just to see what happens. Maybe the reason it was acting up was that I have had it open for about a week... and it had 24 tabs open. That's not as bad as I normally get but it's probably the reason why I'm afraid to open Opera anymore; I have an entire window full of tabs that are as tiny as they can get, and it terrifies me the kind of load time that would have, and then I have the window that I actually use. I'm definitely liking doing this blogging in Safari, though. It's nice. The highlighting of the field I'm typing in is especially helpful.
May possibly be getting access to old hard drive via external hard drive case. And more iTunes fun. I'm seriously considering getting an iPod, and the fact that I've lost my mp3 player is not helping this case.
And woah. Tag auto completion? I totally didn't know I had a "bad fic" tag. Um. Need to look into why I have some of these tags. *realizes some people actually use tags for serious purposes.*

Okay, so that whole content strike? Apparently when I said one day, I meant, well, almost two months. Yeah.
Anyway, life generally sucks among those around me: my brother has a sinus infection (yech), my uncle is having heart, lung, and kidney problems (but only two of those are new...) Isn't life grand?
AAAnyway, the main reason I'm here would be that I'm horribly bored. And desperately in need of some good crossover fanfiction... that I haven't already read. (There really just isn't a whole lot of House/Who going on if I've read the same one a couple or three times.) And that I wanted to share this. I'd been bored, as I mentioned, and I wanted to see if Eddie Izzard had ever done a Doctor Who bit. That's okay, he was only a candidate for the role in 2003. And then I found the link from earlier. Hah.
Can you tell I'm insane? Well, I guess it's a plea for good fic. Or something. I think.

3:17 pm - Intarwebz = suckage right now.
|
|
No, not all the intarwebz. Just mine. And now Skiffy's borked. Er, for those of you who read this who live there (Ivvy, Ruth, I'm staring in your vague directions) let people know I'm not dead. (Anyway, I have a plan for when I do die. That's slightly morbid and creepy, and we're not talking about it now.) Oh, and let EKS know that it's amazing: I gotted a thread named after me 'cos you guys miss me? On the other hand, that could be fans of the yogurt. Excuse me for a moment where my ego gets a little bruised by thinking about that. (Psst! The "it" in the title isn't helping!)
Grff. I can't log in to Skiffy, even if I wanted to. *glare in Skiffy's general direction* I'm not happy about this. *needs to find an unhappy icon* (In regards to that, my rather paltry collection includes my default icon, the little kitty of non-emotions, a Browncoat Ten macro, a random Ten in Nine's jacket -ness, and "apooft with amusement" goodness. Geez: I appear to be either Whofly squeeing, amused, or wordless.)
Promise, though -- I'm not dead, just the internet.

7:50 pm - Ugh.
|
I'm sick. I went to Wal-Mart the other day to buy some toys for my (more or less, but not now, this we will talk of later) dying Uncle. And we went by the pharmacy aisles, because we were going to get him some lip balm. And I'm wandering about, and I see their collection of Beta. Mass-market Beta. They didn't look happy, and they were stacked up, and the ones on bottom had their air vents covered. They were set out to die. I find this sickening.
And their clementines were mushy and moldy. Eew.

7:43 pm - "Adult Content" -- thanks, LJ!
|
Okay, while I understand the Adult content warnings, and restriction of pages that are adult content, what I do not understand is the magical "OMG, it's a cut, and nobody pays attention to the 'Adult Content' dropdown box, so it must be adult content! BWAH!" thing. To be sure, I noticed it, but only because so many people don't.
Is this an adult concept? Unless understanding one's blog is an adult concept, no, not really. Thanks, LJ, I'll go fix that to be Journal default - no adult content here.

So I'm suddenly hit upside the head with a ginormous mobile brick wall telling me that I absolutely NEED to hear someone try to play the Who theme on, of all things, crystal glasses. This is what I get for watching the CiN special again. Stupid me. Anyway, if anybody is amazing and has seen/heard this done, now is the time to tell me.
It's a sad state of affairs when randomness hits you and refuses to leave until it's satisfied, but alas, this is me. Have fun with that.

7:55 pm - Free Rice.com
|
Fizzix is addicted to FreeRice.com; you give free rice to countries with hunger issues, and you learn words. And I'm a word person. And it's addicting; you can keep going for hours and hours. For every word you get right, you give 10 grains of rice. I don't know when I started, but so far, I've given 2610 grains of rice.
The level fluctuates with your responses; one word wrong chucks you down a level, three words right boosts you up a level. It shows you exactly how much you've donated after each response, and it's great; you never, ever take away rice, even if you're wrong; you're demoted, but then you get to work your way back up. My range has been from 35-40, inclusive. It's amazing stuff.

6:15 pm - Do I have a life? No.
|
I have just spent over an hour downloading, updating, and playing with alternate browsers. I already use Firefox, so no surprise there (but I did download new applications for it, oddly), but I got Opera and Safari, telling myself it was for the development of web pages. I think I just lied to myself!
So, Safari... I've heard about it, but the few times I've used Macs, I've gone with what I knew: IE. This was pre-Firefox, I tell you. But Safari - they're not kidding when they say clean interface. It's like iTunes, but darker, and not wire-brushed. I seem to recall that older iTunes was wire-brushed, and I kind of miss that. Another "woah" feature of Safari, though: there's none of this "status bar at the bottom of the screen" nonsense. And as a Firefox user, that seems very, very odd. Like, woah. My screen seems so big, but it seems big anyway. This makes it feel MASSIVE. I'm not sure I like this. One peeve: in most of my programs, the start bar shows up when I mouse down to it. This is normal. Safari doesn't like my start bar: if I want it, I have to hit the Windows key (which, on my computer, is all neat. It's got a sort of inset with the Vista Windows circle in it).
Opera: it's a mix between the bubble-ness of some of the Firefox buttons and the sleek compactness of the overhead buttons of IE. (Unfortunately, to make this comparison, I had to open IE.) You may or may not know that Firefox has an optional "Session Manager" application that lets you save all your tabs and such, but Opera does that standardly: I close it, when I open it again, all my tabs are there! This could get annoying, but it seems like I'll be making it my standard Whofic fic browser. There's this thing called "Speed Dial", too. Whenever I open a new tab, it offers me a choice of nine webpages that I can set myself, and I just click. There're nifty previews of the page, too; so far I have it set to the Skiffy Who forum, the Skiffy Firefly forum, and Gmail. I'll add Whofic later. It could get annoying with extended use of the browser, but as I plan to use it mainly for Whofic-ing, this shouldn't be a problem.
Firefox is now my native and default browser. I downloaded a utility that lets me view pages like they'd view in IE, so I never have to go to IE again, even for Windows update.... it's amazing. I love my Firefox, and I've learned some nifty shortcuts. To go to my homepage, I open a new tab <control>+<t>, then hit <alt>+<home>. It's really quick, and then I'm at Skiffy's Who forums. I download spell checking applications, session managers (allowing me to keep my tabs when I have to go), ad blockers (haha, but don't tell Skiffy), and French spell checking. When am I going to type a document in French? NEVER. But anyway, I have it just in case.
Which means I have four browsers open. *closes IE, which shouldn't have been open* Three. Firefox, Opera, and Safari. The latter shall be my image pilferer, the former is my standard, and Opera... fanfic. Should I be using three browsers? Probably not. Am I? Yes. *grin* Isn't life grand?

Hah! I'm back... with nothing really to say; my new computer doesn't have an A:/ drive, and... yeah. So, I have Vista now, and I have to transfer crap from one computer to another, via a third, because the motherboard on the other doesn't work, so I have to put the HD in the other. Yay.
But I kinda caught up with the last 50 posts from you guys, and... yeah. Neat fics, neat stuffs. Here's to me getting my stuff on my new computer so I can work.

Okay, horrified time! I just finished a lovely fic by Howlcastle, called "The Certainty of Chance", I and I guess I was spoiled for the marathon read, 'cos I just went to the "Most Recent" page on Whofic, and I saw two stories, innocently not badly summarized, but by the same author. Why the warning lights didn't go off then, I'm not sure. So, we have a magical story about the Daleks in a movie theater (Ow, pain. NEED REAL FIC NOW!), and one about a space flu. The titles should have told me something. Really, they should have. They were wretched, and long, and I think capitalization was b0rk'd.
Actually, the summaries were pretty bad too. Oh, need some good fic now. Or maybe I can go just watch Nine. Or something. "Song for Ten" also has therapeutic properties. And so does the good fic that I'd cued up to read after those. "The Last Act of the Time War" was beautiful. It was. *sniff* So... yeah.
Both of those are at Whofic, but LJ isn't happy with me right now... Won't let me use HTML to link, and spazzes out to break the first paragraph when I try.
Random update time: my fanfics are on hiatus - they're on the laptop that another familial unit has absconded from. Not that I think anyone really cares about them anyway. Maybe I'll get back around to Doctor!Cats.
Also, I have the irrational craving for a shirt, along the lines of the Browncoats: "Joss Whedon is my master now." I have my own version that I desperately want to see, and lemme tell you - it's not written in the Star Wars font like that one is. "John Simm is my Master now." I'm going to get around to making a macro of that. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. He's also the reason I bought "I Can't Decide" from the iTunes music store. It now lives on my Doctor Who playlist. (Er, so do a couple of random Monty Python songs, the Doctor Who Soundtrack, Doctor Who remixes, "Tainted Love", and "Doctorin' the TARDIS." I'm trying to justify putting "White and Nerdy" on there, but... haha.
And, HonorH, sorry. I just had to steal the tag.

So my cat has a urinary infection or something. We think so. And she has medication now - which I'm allergic to. Almost killed me when I was a kid. Now we find out how allergic I am. Am I just allergic by consumption, or allergic by contact, or allergic by proximity? Hoping it's the first... O.o"
In a related note: Facebook is unbroken: I had broken it where the Facebook logo was a picture of Jack, Martha, and Ten. I'd show you a picture, but apparently now I've broken photobucket. (Oh. It's under maintenance? Why didn't it tell me that the first five times I checked?) Lemme go do some reverse engineering and steal the URL from a cross-posted source.
( Surprise! Picture in here. )
So'z, now it's back to normal, and I'm sad. And worried about possible allergies. It's deadly, I tell you. While you're at it, hand the Doctor a bottle of aspirin. For his companions, of course.

6:45 pm - Kitties!
|
|
I can’t help it: I’m measuring time in Doctor Who episodes again. *sigh, rolleyes* I’ve been meaning to post something for a week now. Well, I say a week, I mean a week and change. I got two new, adorable kittens on the day Gridlock aired on Skiffy. *grin* That made it much more enjoyable. Kitties, when I knew the content already? I’d had a mediocre day, and the power was out earlier, but I had kittens! They’re red tabbies, and they were probably 8 weeks old. We adopted them from the vet. Sisters, two of them. So… eh, I think red. Totally NOT thinking of Doctor Who at the time, I decide that mine is named Rose. I love Rose, she’s a bit of an idiot. Then, trying to name the other, we thought of other women on Doctor Who (OMG, not my suggestion. I <3 my family), but decided that no, Jackie was bad, and so was Martha (… no comment. I’d seen two episodes then, and I’m sure I don’t want my little red kitten named Martha. Sounds… old lady, Martha aside) and Donna. So she’s Tess. Though she might be a he. If (s)he is, he’ll be called Tesla. *grin* Said my father was a Physics teacher, yeah? I love my kitties, and Rose purrs when I pick her up. Her attention span isn’t quite long enough for Doctor Who yet, though. *sigh* We tried.
